Watch Malcolm Allen Sing “Superstition” in the American Idol 2014 Premiere (VIDEO)

It’s been a long, hard hiatus since Candice Glover was crowned the winner of American Idol Season 12. Thankfully, our favorite music competition returned tonight (January 15), and we met a whole new crop of hopefuls looking to become the country’s next big superstar!

Kicking off the latest tour of the United States, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and new judge Harry Connick Jr. headed for Austin, Texas and Boston, Massachusetts. (Of course, Ryan Seacrest was also there to provide much-needed commentary.)

It’s in Austin where the judges meet Malcolm Allen, a 21-year-old deli grocer who laments his inability to play the acoustic guitar. Thankfully, he’s got plenty of other skills on his hands. Though it’s a bold move for any singer, Malcolm takes on Stevie Wonder’s classic song “Superstition,” much to the judges’ delight.

“It’s so natural for you, I want to throw this pen at you!” jokes J.Lo. “I think your voice is something special. I’m gonna say yes, yes... double, triple yes today!”

“Well, I guess we don’t need to answer,” says Keith.

What do you think of Malcolm’s performance? Will he make it to the Top 31? Read our spoilers here!
