Live TV always provides for major surprises, but nobody could have prepared for what took place outside the Today show studios on Thursday morning.
According to TMZ, a man in the crowd outside the show’s New York City studio slashed his wrists during the live broadcast.
The man, who is in his 50s, pulled out a knife and began to slice himself in Rockefeller Plaza while Today hosts Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie stood nearby.
The event, which was not captured on film, was addressed by the hosts once they were back safely inside the studio.
“There was an incident on the plaza we just want to tell you about. A short time ago, man out there tried to harm himself with a knife. He did manage to cut himself. He was controlled by our security team out there, however, he did harm himself in some way, and so he’s now being attended to by medical personnel,” Matt Lauer explained.
“The situation is contained,” noted Savannah. “He’s being attended to and nobody else, as we understand it, was injured.”
“The individual did say something about not wanting to harm others, but wanting to harm himself,” added Matt.
