It’s a question fans ask every season on Dancing With the Stars — is it fair for some contestants to show up with previous dance training or is it supposed to be purely for newbies?
Two of the final three dancers of Season 17 came from performing backgrounds, including Corbin Bleu who was on Broadway. Does that take away from what the show is supposed to be about?
Pro Mark Ballas opened up on the topic in a candid Spreecast chat.
"At no point ever did anyone say that the show is about people that don't have dance experience,” Mark said. “It's not called Dancing With the Inexperienced of Dance Stars, it's called Dancing With the Stars. And it's virtually impossible to find 12 people in the entertainment industry that don't have dance experience. I mean, we're talking about actors, actresses, performers, singers, you know? These people are going to have dance experience, and just because they've danced on Broadway or they've taken some classes or they've been in musicals, that doesn't make them a professional ballroom dancer. Could it make their experience a little bit easier? Yeah, of course it could."
But, he added, we've seen over and over that the best dancer does not always win. There’s just no way to please everyone. Some people got upset when Bill Engvall went so far because he wasn’t a great dancer, but then people complained that Corbin shouldn't have been allowed to do well because he had dance experience. Leah Remini talked a lot about having no experience, Mark noted, but she lasted longer than Snooki, his own partner Christina Milian and a lot of others, so it didn't matter too much.
"It's just one of those sensitive subjects, you know,” he said. “It's like you'll never be able to please everybody. It just is what it is. You're going to have people with dance experience."
What do you think about that? Do you agree that there will always be some element of previous dance experience?
