Marlene King Responds to Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Poster Controversy

For those who missed it, Pretty Little Liars released its official promo poster for Season 4B earlier this week to great critical response. Both Troian Bellisario (Spencer) and Ashley Benson (Hanna) spoke out about the highly-photoshopped image and the use of the Liars’ faces from four years ago when the show first premiered. What does PLL showrunner Marlene King think of the poster?

Fans took to Twitter in the aftermath of the poster fiasco, looking to Marlene for answers. First, she confirmed that the poster was in fact “real” we’re assuming in the sense that it is the actual promo poster set to be used to promote Season 4B. (Because the images of the Liars in the image really do make them look more like dolls than actually people.)

@imarleneking why did you edit it so much?” asked Twitter user @ItIsJustTheGirl. “They're pretty just the way they are. And everyone has flaws, there's no real need to photoshop.”

Marlene’s response: “I'm not involved with the posters. And all for fans expressing their feelings to @ABCFpll. We are all beautiful. @ItIsJustTheGirl.”

We like that Marlene encouraged the continued reaction to the poster, asking fans to tweet at the official handle for PLL, but do you think she should have gone further? Though she is not involved in the promotions department, she certainly has a great deal of say on the show. Or do you think this poster thing has been blown out of proportion?

Catch the Pretty Little Liars Season 4 winter premiere on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC Family.
