Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Set the Record Straight: “We Don’t Have Everything”
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are covering Allure’s December 2013 issue, but there’s a catch — each girl got her own cover to reflect her individual personality. And on both covers, the girls sport flawless and very natural looks. We like!
The 27-year-old sisters may have gone from sharing the role of Michelle Tanner on Full House to transforming into two savvy fashion designers and business women, but the road to get there wasn’t as easy as people think.
“I think people looked at us with the perception of, ‘Oh, you just have everything, you can do whatever,’” Mary-Kate told Allure. “Strangers assumed we had enough money to just do nothing — or why would we go to college? And it’s such an uneducated perspective! You still have to grow within business. You have to take a chance.”
“It’s not like you wake up one day and have a huge company with four or five different companies within the companies,” Ashley added. “Not to mention our past and future.”
Earlier this month, Mary-Kate and Ashley told WWD that they’re done with acting for good, and it’s not because they don’t love the industry — it’s because they love the world of fashion more.
“I was reading scripts, and ultimately, I just said to the people representing me, ‘I need to do things 100%. I don’t feel like I can give you 100% of my time,’” Ashley shared. “There’s a lot of compromise in the entertainment industry. I can’t sit in this room and audition for this part.”
And while we already miss the Olsen and Olsen Mystery Agency — they’ll solve any crime by dinnertime, duh — we’re so happy to see that MK&A are finding mega-success in an industry they love.
