‘The Vampire Diaries’ Faces #BuryYourGays Backlash After Killing Off Lesbian Couple
With its latest pair of deaths, The Vampire Diaries has royally ticked off fans.
The April 1 installment, titled “Days of Future Past,” saw the end of the show’s first-ever lesbian couple Mary Louise and Nora Hildegard when their car burst into flames as they destroyed the phoenix stone and its accompanying dagger.
While we’ve only gotten to know the heretics since the beginning of Season 7, they’d already spawned the shipper name Noralise and had amassed a loyal following.
Beyond that, however, their passing is only the most recent in a slew of TV deaths bringing to the forefront the #BuryYourGays and #LGBTFansDeserveBetter campaigns, both of which call attention to LGBT characters dying while their straight counterparts live on.
Here are some of the fan reactions:
With Vampire Diaries, there's another gay couple down. #buryyourgays— franzi // cappie (@cappie_ed) April 2, 2016
Nora and Mary Louise have joined Lexa and Rose in the Bury Your Gays trope. @TheCW, how about you tell your show to STOP KILLING LESBIANS!!!— Dened Rey (@Hajabeg) April 3, 2016
They purposefully made Nora and Mary Louise gay to draw in viewers, only to kill them off after they were truly happy. How original!!!— Liv (@bonniesreyes) April 1, 2016
TVD is only the latest in a slew of fictional deaths that have fans furious, with The CW itself being guilty of killing off Lexa on The 100 and Rose on Jane the Virgin. In addition, Denise from The Walking Dead and Kira from The Magicians add to the count.
And that’s all just since the end of February!
We’re not saying the creative forces on the shows are doing this purposefully — the opposite, actually — it just seems to be a very unfortunate coincidence.
The Vampire Diaries Season 7 airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
