Every actor who wins an award as monumental as an Oscar has a long list of people he or she would like to thank — usually, their family, friends, and the people they’ve worked with. But when Matthew McConaughey took home the Best Actor award at last night’s Oscars, he added someone else very important to his list: himself.

“When I was fifteen years old, I had a very important person in my life come to me and say, ‘Who’s your hero?’ and I said, ‘I don’t know, I gotta think about that. Give me a couple weeks,’” Matthew said. “I come back two weeks later and this person comes up and says, ‘Who’s your hero?’ and I said, ‘I thought about it. You know who it is? It’s me in ten years.’”

“So I turned 25 ten years later. That same person comes to me and goes, ‘So are you a hero?’ And I said, ‘Not even close,’” Matthew continued. “He said, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘Because my hero’s me at 35.’ So, you see, every day, every week, every month, and every year of my life, my hero’s always ten years away. I’m never gonna beat my hero. I’m never gonna obtain that. And I know I’m not, and that’s just fine with me because that keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing.”

Matthew didn’t just attribute his win to himself, though: He showed his appreciation to the usual suspects: God, his Dallas Buyers Club co-stars, his family, and his late father, too. And, you know, he also proved that if this whole acting thing doesn’t work out forever, he’s got a future in motivational speaking. So that’s something.

In other news, Leonardo DiCaprio continues to be Oscarless. There’s always next year, Leo!
