Sandra Bullock isn’t the only one taking home the awards at the 2014 Palm Springs International Film Festival — Saturday, Matthew McConaughey was presented with the year’s Achievement Award, which he credited, in large part, to his role in Dallas Buyers Club.
“I’d like to thank my own family, who was incredibly encouraging at 5 AM out the door in the morning in the dark,” Matthew said in his acceptance speech, according to Us Weekly. “And you were incredibly encouraging coming home at 8 PM each night.”
“I know I wasn’t easy to live with at that time,” Matthew added as he continued to thank his wife, Camila Alves, and their three children, Levi, Vida, and Livingston. “You never let me know that. I appreciate it.”
Matthew was referring to the nearly 40 pounds he had to lose to play HIV patient Ron Woodruff — with came with a set of complications he and his family hadn’t expected. Although he lost the weight in a healthy way (through eating small amounts of nutrition-packed clean foods like fresh fish), he said in November the weight loss caused him to experience side effects like body soreness. Yikes!
“We did have enough food on set, but we couldn’t eat it,” Matthew commented. “We all became obsessed with it. We were unable to objective in the making of it.”
We’re glad Matthew’s returned to a normal, healthy weight — and his family is probably pretty glad Dad’s less hungry (and therefore less cranky), too.
