The Blacklist’s Megan Boone Dishes on Awkward First Read With James Spader

We can imagine working with a dynamo like James Spader (Raymond Reddington) is a little intimidating — but his The Blacklist co-star Megan Boone (Elizabeth Keen) nearly choked to death the first time they read lines together! The actress related the story of her brush with mortality in a recent Q&A with Us Weekly.

“I was going to go do my first scene with James so tensions were high, I was very nervous,” Megan begins. While rehearsing with a PA and snacking on popcorn to “alleviate some of [her] nervous energy,” James popped by to chat with his new co-star.

“When I heard him say his name, a popcorn kernel lodged itself in the back of my throat. He cleared the room and he's having this long discussion about our characters and so forth, and meanwhile I'm choking on this popcorn. I'm trying to hide it from him; I don't want him to know.”

Thankfully for both Megan and the series, she managed to save herself from choking — but the incident had a funny similarity to her first scene with James. “The popcorn ended up dislodging from my throat, and I ended up shooting the scene where Elizabeth stabs the pen in Red's neck.” Yikes!

Despite the awkward nature of their first meeting, Megan says James was immediately reassuring and much kinder than the kinds of characters he often plays (Red included). “He actually said, 'You know, whatever you need, I'm here for you, we're going to be a great team.'”
