It may have come as a surprise to us that Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith have decided to end their marriage after 18 years together, but to their friends and family? A divorce was totally expected.
And while at first, sources close to the couple said that their split was totally amicable, we’re getting the feeling that might not be true. Although the couple spent nearly two decades in wedded bliss, other sources say that they’ve both been wanting out for a long time now.
“The split is not something new and out of the blue, they have had issues for years,” the insider tells People. “The fights and separations got to be too much.”
Totally understandable — relationships can be hard to begin with, but considering the fact that Melanie and Antonio’s jobs can often take them to opposite ends of the world? That adds a new level of complicated.
“He has always led an international life and during the times they were apart for business or film work, he began to live his own life away from her,” the source adds.
The former couple met in 1995 on the set of Too Much, and have since joined forces in what seemed like a happy marriage. So far, the movie stars have yet to comment themselves on what pushed Melanie to file for divorce on June 6.
We may never know what the real cause of Melanie and Antonio’s divorce is, but we do know that a separation after such a long marriage is inevitably a difficult thing — for the couple and for their 17-year-old daughter, Stella.
“It’s very sad,” a second source says. “They had a solid relationship for so many years.”
