Melissa Benoist’s Intense New Role in Whiplash — Watch the Trailer! (VIDEO)
Melissa Benoist’s (Marley)days on Glee might be pretty much over save for a brief appearance in the show’s sixth and final season, but her career as a movie actress is only just beginning. Before Glee, Melissa had never appeared in a movie, but now her first feature, Whiplash, is set to open on October 10 and we’ve got the trailer just for you!
Whiplash is about a young musician named Andrew (Miles Teller) who struggles to make it as a jazz drummer, and Melissa plays his girlfriend, Nicole. That short synopsis may sound innocent enough, but as the trailer below suggests the movie actually gets pretty dark as Andrew’s music teacher, Terence Fletcher, (played by Law & Order’s J.K. Simmons) pushes him to become a better drummer via verbal and physical abuse.
Melissa is only shown briefly in the trailer, but from what we see her character Nicole plays a pivotal role in the movie as Andrew’s life begins to unravel and he grows obsessed with becoming a better musician. This role is certainly a departure from Glee’s Marley, and we can’t wait to see what Melissa does with a meatier part.
So far the movie, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is getting great buzz. It currently has a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and seems like the perfect way for Melissa to transition from Glee to more intense parts. In fact, the 25-year-old actress already has two other movies in the works: Imagine and The Longest Ride, which is currently in production.
