Melissa McCarthy Reveals Why Her 20s Were a “Decade of Tears” (VIDEO)
Melissa McCarthy might be good at making us laugh, but her journey from unknown actress to the full-fledged movie star we know her as today wasn’t always as funny as the characters she portrays. In fact, when she was first starting out, Melissa struggled with her body image to the point where it made her cry regularly.
“In my 20s I used to cry about why I wasn’t thinner or prettier, but I want to add that I also used to cry about things like: ‘I wish my hair would grow faster.’ ‘I wish I had different shoes,’” Melissa said in a recent interview with People. “I was an idiot … It was a decade of tears.”
We can all relate to that — no matter how hard we try to love and accept ourselves as we are, there are always days when that’s easier said than done. And Melissa’s come a long way since then!
“I’ll do almost anything for a laugh,” Melissa said. “I’m completely delighted by people who think, ‘I don’t care what anybody else thinks, I look great in this, and I rock it and I love it.’ It’s such a delightful sort of confidence.”
And even though Melissa’s been at the center of controversy during her career — the Elle cover scandal of ‘13, anyone? — she hasn’t let criticism stop her from doing what she loves.
“I’ve never felt like I needed to change,” she admitted. “I’ve always thought, ‘If you want somebody different, pick somebody else.’”
You go, Melissa. Now, let’s all gather around and watch Bridesmaids again. And maybe a little Gilmore Girls after that?
