Though Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd are happily married with kids these days, back in Season 1 of Grey’s Anatomy, Mer was literally pushing Derek out the door after their one-night stand.
While this moment is what kick-started MerDer’s relationship and made fans fall in love with the show, it almost didn’t happen. Creator Shonda Rhimes revealed during a chat on NPR that ABC execs claimed that “nobody was going to watch a show about a woman who had casual sex and threw a guy out the night before her first day of work, that that was completely unrealistic and nobody wanted to know that woman.”
And as we’ve seen through a decade of Grey’s and Shonda’s other show Scandal, which focuses on an adulterous president, clearly they had no idea what they were talking about.
These comments happened during an early discussion with ABC with “a bunch of older guys” who no longer work at the network before Grey’s was picked up. As she recalls, she was brought into a room, told that Meredith’s casual sex habits were unlikable, and the whole time, she was thinking, “Wow, they don’t know anything that’s going on in the world right now.”
In Season 10, Meredith is no longer sleeping around, but people are still having sex left and right, and surprise, surprise — they’re still likeable. While Arizona Robbins sleeping with intern Leah Murphy isn’t going over well with the Calzona shippers, they’re not upset at how casual it is. Instead, they just miss their favorite couple.
As Shonda puts it, the conversation she faced a decade ago would never happen now. Anti-heroes are the new heroes, and “we're in a world in which nobody's worried about whether or not the women are likable.” Instead of female stars with perfect personalities who “had to represent everybody,” you can have flawed characters like Meredith Grey and Olivia Pope, and thankfully, Shonda keeps bringing ‘em to us.
“There's a box that you get placed in,” Shonda said, drawing a conclusion about female leads. “My goal, really, is to blow that box wide open.”
