How Will Meredith Grey React to Her New Half-Sister, Maggie Pierce?

As season finales of Grey’s Anatomy tend to do, the last episode of Season 10 really dropped a bomb on us. Fortunately, it wasn’t an actual bomb — although, knowing Shonda Rhimes, that wouldn’t have come as a shock to us, either. Nope, we were left to spend the summer dwelling on the fact that Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) has a secret sister we’ve never met before… and we found out before she did.

In case you need a refresher, Season 10’s finale (Episode 24: “Fear (Of The Unknown)”) introduced us to Maggie Pierce (played by Kelly McCreary), the doctor who is the new head of cardio at Grey Sloan Memorial… and who announced herself to Richard (James Pickens, Jr) as the secret daughter of Ellis Grey. And it’s looking likely that Maggie’s dad is actually Richard. Um, awkward.

And despite the fact that this particular plot twist is highly unrealistic (after all, it is Grey’s), we suspect it’ll have a big influence on Season 11, especially where Meredith’s concerned. So how will she react? Here are our predictions:

Meredith will be really pissed. We all remember how Meredith reacted the last time she found out she had a half-sister. When Lexie (Chyler Leigh) first arrived on the scene, it took Meredith a lot of time to open up to her, and finding out that she has a sister from Richard and Ellis’s affair? It’s not going to be pretty. Perhaps we’ll see the return of Mer’s therapist?

Also, apparently surgical skills are genetic, because everyone on Meredith’s bloodline happens to be incredibly talented in the OR. How do we get in on this?

Meredith will open her arms to her new sister — especially since she needs all the support she can get. Losing Lexie was really hard on Meredith (and, to be honest, us too) and now, her best friend Cristina (Sandra Oh) has moved across the world. Meredith needs a new sidekick — someone to match her shot for shot of tequila and dance it out with, the usual BFF stuff. Maybe the loss of her biggest support system will be enough to make her try to have a relationship with Maggie?

Meredith already knows. Chances are good that Maggie was born before Meredith was, so Mer never would have seen Ellis pregnant. However, she did have access to her mom’s old diaries… and when she was struggling with Alzheimer’s, Ellis was a totally open book. Is it possible that Meredith already knows that Maggie exists but has avoided dealing with it for all these years? It’s not like we haven’t seen her avoid stuff before!
