We had no idea this was ever even a thing, but apparently before Michael Cudlitz was confirmed to be playing Abraham Ford on The Walking Dead about a year ago, there were rumors going around that he was wary of joining the AMC hit. Not surprisingly, Michael recently confirmed that this chatter couldn’t be further from the truth.

“I wasn't hesitant,” he tells E! Online before opting to find the “little bit of truth in there somewhere.” And what is that truth?

“I wanted to do the show and there was an initial discussion that they weren't sure if I, an actor coming off of Southland... They didn't want the things that I had done prior to affect the show in any way in the sense that I would take away from it, in the sense that I might be too recognizable because of my previous work,” Michael explains. “And there was concern on AMC's part that it might distract from the show.”

Michael’s character on Southland was also gay, but given that the TWD Powers That Be are toying with making Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) gay and Robert Kirkman has already said AMC would be on board with that, we doubt that’s what the network was hung up when casting Michael.

As it turns out, showrunner Scott Gimple had the last word anyway. Michael explains, “Ultimately Scott really wanted me and some of the AMC execs really wanted me and so they figured it out.”

As you may have guessed, the 49-year-old was very glad that things worked out the way they did. “I was thrilled to even be considered once I knew what it was,” he recalls. “At first I didn't know what the role was because that's how they do things, but when I found out what it was I said, ‘OK we've got to make this happen.’”
