The Walking Dead Season 4: Did We See Michonne’s Family In a Flashback?

Michonne (Danai Gurira) spent a lot of time in her own head in The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 9, "After." While it kind of sucked for Michonne, who spent a good portion of the episode crying and letting out some Tyreese-level rage, it was great for fans who wanted a little bit of insight on what made her the katana-weilding warrior woman she is today. However, it wasn't a flashback, unless you know of any standard-size knife blocks that can magically hold a full-size katana.

The Walking Dead Season 4: Did We See Michonne’s Family In a Flashback?

In a kind of daydream (day-nightmare?), we see Michonne in the kitchen of a high-rise condo, hobnobbing about film with two gentleman: her boyfriend, Mike, and his friend, Terry. While at first, it seems like a happy scene, with the trio eating sushi and having a spirited discussion. Eventually, a child shows up and jumps into Michonne's arms.

Right as they're about to crack a bottle of wine, though, the scene begins to change. Mike and Terry slowly morph into who they became as Walkers: Michonne's original pets. The child disappears. Slowly, we're forced back into Michonne's present reality, alone and surrounded by very real Walkers.

"It's like she's in a different movie," said producer Greg Nicotero of the sequence. "It was sort of a deterioration of a dream."

So was that her family? Mike and Terry were real people from Michonne's past, but don't think that's actually Michonne's son as much as a phantom of what might've been if MIke were still alive. (UPDATE: As we learned in Season 4, Episode 11: "Claimed," that was, indeed, her son.)

"Mike," Michonne cried at the end of the episode,."I miss you. I missed you even when I was with you. Back at the camp. That wasn't you who did it. You were wrong. Because I'm still here. And you could be too. And he could be. I know the answer. I know why."

"And he could be" is certainly a big tease toward the future, which we think refers to Terry. Without giving too much away, Mike and Terry's fate isn't the longest story in the comic books — they certainly didn't make it to any camps together. It'll be interesting to see if the show gives them meatier fates.
