Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie Tried Counseling for 18 Months Before Split — Report

We were absolutely shocked and heartbroken when we learned that Hilary Duff and her husband, retired hockey player Mike Comrie, had split after three years of marriage. Luckily, Hilary and Mike have decided to have an “amicable separation” and are remaining “great friends.” But now we’re getting new reports of how their marriage deteriorated.

“She felt he didn’t put enough effort into the relationship,” a source tells Us Weekly. Apparently the pair made strides to get over sources of conflict in their relationship, even opting for 18 months of counseling. “But recently he wasn’t doing any of the things they’d worked on,” the source continues. Wowza, that’s a long time in counseling!

But what sorts of things led to them need counseling? Mike, 33, suffered a career-ending injury in 2012, and a source close to the former Lizzie McGuire star tells Us that Mike has lost almost all ambition since the accident. “He never did anything,” the source revealed to the mag.

Even though they share love for 22-month-old son Luca, “the spark was no longer there,” another source explains. “They are better as friends.”

While there are tons of things being speculated about Hilary and Mike’s split, the singer/actress herself took to Twitter today, January 15, to warn fans about misinformation. “Don’t believe the s—t you read! & don’t buy trash magazines! They are so gross and so negative :( they Literally make my skin crawl #Beaboveit,” she tweeted.

Either way, we really hope that this marriage can at least turn into a friendship, especially for baby Luca’s sake.
