Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino Blames Dancing With the Stars Injury For Drug Addiction

Dancing With the Stars is one of the toughest reality competitions out there, and at times the pressure is too much for certain contestants to handle. For some, the trouble is learning the steps and keeping up with their pro partners, while for others, injuries can set them back — both in the ballroom and back in their real lives after the show ends.

For Jersey Shore’s Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, his injury on DWTS Season 11 led to a prescription painkiller addiction. From 2010 to February 2012, he couldn’t live without his opioid painkillers, which he realized when his prescription ran out during an Australian vacation.

“All I had to do was get dressed for a family function and I couldn't do that," he told the Associated Press. "The shirt was laid out, the belt, the pants, everything. The shower was on. I couldn't even get out of bed.”

After questioning, "If I can't do that how am I going to continue?" he headed to rehab, and the aftermath was seen in the final season of Jersey Shore when he was completely sober and struggled going to the clubs with his Shore pals. Now, Mike is revealing the details, explaining that he takes medication to treat the opioid addiction and is in counseling.

These days, he is curing his disease and is a paid spokesman for Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the company that makes his medicine, and recently helped launch a program called Reset Reality that spreads knowledge and understanding of his addiction.

For now, he’ll be taking one day at a time, and he has plans to return to showbiz. It likely won’t be on a Jersey Shore reboot or another season of Dancing With the Stars, but we wish him all the best in his recovery and career.

Are you surprised that Mike’s addiction stemmed from DWTS? Sound off below.
