Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga See Major Sales Boost Post-VMAs

Want to get your records moving out the door? Find a foam finger and use it to pop people’s personal bubbles. At least, that’s the lesson we’ve learned after seeing the latest numbers from the Billboard Digital Songs chart.

In the first full week of sales since the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus has seen singles from her forthcoming album Bangerz leap up the chart. Her song “Wrecking Ball” went from #8 to #5 (that’s an increase in sales of 124 percent) while “We Can’t Stop” (the one she performed at the VMAs) fell to #9 but kept selling strongly. Say what you will about the questionable taste of her August 25 performance — girlfriend got her singles to sell.

Also benefiting from what MTV labeled “the VMA bump” are fellow female pop stars Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Katy’s single “Roar,” which she closed the show with, sold 448,000 copies in a single week.

It was just enough support to knock fellow VMA performer Robin Thicke’s song “Blurred Lines” from its #1 perch, which fell to #3. Guess the VMA bump only applies to 20-year-old twerkers. Or perhaps people lost their taste for the song after seeing the lines the married 36-year-old recently blurred with a particularly clingy fan.

As for Lady Gaga, her single rose 31 percent to take over spot #4 with 213,000 digital copies sold. That deserves a round of “Applause,” dontcha think?
