The world has been feeling Miley Cyrus fever ever since her polarizing, sexualized performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards in August. And with her new album, Bangerz, dropping October 4, that fever shows no sign of breaking.

But some critics aren't feeling the heat. Elysa Gardner of USA Today gives the album the lukewarm-est of reviews, appraising it as "a collection of competent, mostly generic tunes that juggle self-conscious sass with glimmers of earnestness … After all this time, crying in public may come naturally to Cyrus. But in its predictable mediocrity, Bangerz gives her, and her followers, nothing to feel bad about."

Jim Farber of the Daily News is harsher, dismissing the album as a "disjointed mess that seeks to provoke instead of delight" and Miley a "twerking twerp [who] doesn't pull off a good time."

He isn't so much a fan of Miley's VMAs outing either: "Whenever Miley goes for such raw sexual moments — in a range it styles — it sounds nearly as forced as that MTV performance looked. And, of course, it's important to remember, that no one on the planet actually liked that performance. They just couldn't stop talking about it, which, apparently, counts for more."

Luckily for Miley, Entertainment Weekly gives her fourth studio album a glowing review. Nick Catucci writes that it's "utterly fresh, a pop blitz from a hip-hop blueprint, and proof that Miley won't settle for just shocking us."
