Students, tongues at the ready! Skidmore College in New York state is offering a class on all things Miley Cyrus and, honestly, we don’t know how to feel about this information.
On one hand: creative. In a photo snapped and posted to Twitter of a flyer announcing the class, “The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender, and Media” will analyze the “aspects of intersectional identities and media representation” of which Miley provides so many “rich examples.”
Taught by Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology Carolyn Chernoff, who does indeed work at Skidmore and lists the course as under her purview (we checked), the course will discuss Miley’s rise as a pop star, her transition to adulthood, and “what happens to Disney stars as they age (see Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and more).”
That all sounds promising and is supposedly enough material to fill two and a half hours three days a week (that’s nearly eight hours of Miley a week, if math wasn’t your major). We’re not sure what kind of assignments Professor Chernoff may have planned for the summer session but, Hannah Montana willing, twerking and tongue flashing won’t be on the rubric.
Would you take a class on Miley Cyrus? Think even Miley would flunk a class like this? Tell us in the comments! Consider it extra credit.
