Miley Cyrus may have broken off her engagement to Liam Hemsworth, but we never saw her sweat. Instead, she transitioned seamlessly from Disney darling to wild child twerker, and put out one of the best albums of her career. Who would have imagined that behind her scantily clad facade, she was struggling with depression and the dissolution of her relationship?
In her cover interview with Elle, Miley owns up to her dark days, and what it was like moving on without Liam. As it turns out, Miley thought she could never survive without Disney and Liam both backing her, but fortunately, she was wrong.
“When I went through a really intense break-up — you know, I was engaged — and when I was with him or when I was on Disney, the thing that gave me the most anxiety was not knowing what to do with myself when Disney wasn’t there to carry me anymore or if I didn’t have him,” Miley admits. “And now I’m free of both of those things, and I’m fine. Like, I lay in bed at night by myself and I’m totally okay, and that’s so much stronger than the person three years ago, who would have thought they would have died if they didn’t have a boyfriend.”
So what helps her through her tough days? Her fans — who constantly remind her how much opening up her personal life to them has helped them with their own struggles. “That gives me a big purpose,” Miley says. “A reason to wake up in the morning that’s bigger than to put on my f—king feathers and my little outfits.”
As heartbreaking as it is to let go of a relationship, especially one you thought was going to be there forever, the Bangerz singer seems to have taken it in stride. Go, Miley!
