Miley Cyrus’s Onstage Pot Smoking Censored at the 2013 MTV EMAs

At last night’s MTV European Music Awards, Miley Cyrus showed up with her usual game plan to shock the audience into talking about her for days afterward. And after her VMA performance earlier this year, we thought it couldn’t get any more shocking than nude colored latex and the now-infamous foam finger, but we were wrong.

If you were at the EMAs, watching live from Amsterdam, you saw Miley light up a joint when she made it on stage to accept her award for Best Music Video for “Wrecking Ball,” but if you were watching at home in the US (like most of us), all you saw was a kind of awkward and choppy acceptance speech.

According to Deadline, the MTV censors cut that part out completely, instead opting to fill the time with a wide shot of the audience that starts just after Miley comes on stage. Only when Miley says her goodbyes do we see her again.

To be fair, she totally warned us — before the awards on Sunday, Miley hinted at what she had planned through a series of suspicious tweets with Katy Perry.

But even so, MTV appears to be less than impressed. We’re not surprised her joint smoking stunt was censored out in the US — the Mom armies were probably already lined up at their door, waiting to defend their teens at home. And although weed is legal in Amsterdam, that’s not quite the case in America just yet.

And according to reports, the powers that be at the network considered it to be “totally uncalled for,” and described it as “shameless” and “brazen.”
