Mindy Kaling on Elle Cover Controversy: It’s Like I Have a “Big, Fat Body”
Hilarious TV star Mindy Kaling appears on the newest issue of Elle magazine, and her cover has sparked outrage, given that Mindy's cover photo was closely cropped instead of featuring her entire body.
So how does Mindy herself feel about the controversy? As it turns out, she loves the cover. "I saw the cover, I don't know if you've seen it, but I thought, ‘I look so, like, beautiful,' and I thought, ‘Wow, I've never looked better. I feel like I look like a movie star on it!'" Mindy tells David Letterman.
The 34-year-old Mindy Project star says she's surprised that anyone took issue with the cover. "I didn't expect this reaction," Mindy says. "The shot is of me is like this [she frames her face with her hands], showing my face. There was a weird reaction, which was, ‘Does Elle magazine think Mindy's not skinny enough to show her whole body, standing up from head to toe?'"
Mindy also feels that the complaints carry a strange implication. "Oh, I thought [the cover] was nice, I guess," Mindy continues, "but the implication was, ‘What, Elle, you can't put her big, fat body on the magazine? Why? 'Cause she's just fat and gruesome? Why can't we look at her beautiful fat body?'" Well said, Mindy.
What do you think of Mindy's reaction? Do you agree with her that people who complain about the cover are implying that there is something wrong with her body?
