Former Miss Venezuela Murdered — 5-Year-Old Daughter Survives

Sad news today from Venezuela where a former beauty queen and well-known soap star was murdered. Monica Spear and her ex-husband, Henry Thomas Berry, were shot to death by highway robbers while on a family vacation, according to a TMZ report. The couple’s daughter, Maya, survived.

Monica, who was Miss Venezuela in 2004, and her family were near the town of Puerto Cabello in Venezuela when their gray Toyota Corolla broke down after a minor accident. (Although the couple were no longer romantically linked, they frequently spent vacations and holidays together for their daughter, sources tell NBC News.)

While waiting for a tow truck on the the Valencia-Puerto Cabello highway, armed men attacked the trio, police tell NBC.

Monica, Henry, and their 5-year-old huddled inside their locked car as the attackers opened fire. The resulting onslaught killed 29-year-old Monica and 39-year-old Henry while their little girl is in the hospital with a bullet wound to her leg.

Fellow Venezuelan and current star of ABC’s The Bachelor Juan Pablo Galavis reacted to the horrific news earlier today. “Still not UNDERSTANDING why we CAN'T stop VIOLENCE in Venezuela... So SAD…,” he writes.

Our hearts go out to the family’s loved ones as they face this tragedy.
