Who would have thought that the most controversial thing about a grown man kissing everyone on the lips would be that it isn't original enough?

On this week’s episode of Modern Family, Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil (Ty Burrell) meet a man (played by Greg Kinnear) who loves to kiss Claire, his mother, his children, and just about everyone on the lips. While the bit was funny, some fans are claiming that it is a blatant rip-off of Saturday Night Live’s “Kissing Family” skit. Just search on Twitter for “Modern Family” and “SNL” and you’ll read the tweets of tons of confused fans.

On paper, the bit seems to be the same as Saturday Night Live’s skit. Greg is a member of a family that loves to kiss on the lips. Okay. But is there more to this skit than just familial smooches? Watch the original SNL skit below.

While the two are similar, SNL’s skit really hinges on the fact that it grosses out the outsider who is brought into the family. Claire and Phil aren’t as grossed out by the kisses, but then again the family in Modern Family isn’t taking kissing to gross-out levels.

Then again, it is hard to deny that there are similarities behind the two bits.
