It’s safe to say that Modern Family wouldn’t be the hit that it is without Sofia Vergara’s character Gloria. In a new article in the Daily Beast, the creators of the hit ABC show explain how and why Sofia was cast in the first place — and why Gloria yells so much.

“Since they discovered that I can scream like a crazy person, they ask me to scream in every episode. In my own life, I have no problems letting out a good scream,” says Sofia. “I always try to remember how my mom used to scream, and my aunt, and how women were in Colombia to make the character as funny as possible.”

One of the show’s creators, Steve Levitan, says that it was easy casting the part of Gloria, because, “If you say you want a really funny, gorgeous, sexy, hot Latina who has killer timing, it’s a very short line in Hollywood...So she was our first and only choice. The character is very true to Sofia’s personality.”

We always love a good, long “Jaaaaaaaaaaay!” from Gloria, not to mention her many shouted instructions to one of the kids when they find themselves in a jam (after she and Luke [Nolan Gould] run over a Christmas tree, she yells, “Never look back!”). But maybe she’ll stop yelling about Stella the Frenchie so much. How could you not love that face?

Watch an all-new Modern Family on Wednesday, February 8 at 9pm ET/PT on ABC.
