Did you know that some people are gay? According to Tennessee Representative Joey Hensley, you shouldn’t. In a recent statement, the politician blamed Modern Family for spreading the word.

The Nashville Scene reports that Mr. Hensley, who is a fan of state legislation known as "Don’t Say Gay," which would force Tennessee teachers to never use the word “gay” in the classroom, said “I don’t think Modern Family is appropriate for children to watch.”

The Scene explains that Hensley discussed “admonishing all Tennessee parents not to let their children watch Modern Family on television because they might discover there are homosexuals in the world” in front of the House Education subcommittee.

Naturally, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell Pritchett) responded to the news on Twitter: “Dear Gay kids in Tennessee, I hope u know there is a huge world beyond the few idiots in your state senate who are saying: ‘Don't Say Gay’.”

We would also like to point out that Modern Family doesn't only present one editorialized opinion on Mitch and  Cam’s (Eric Stonestreet) successful relationship — Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) expresses his discomfort on an almost weekly basis.

Thankfully, kids don’t get all of their information from classrooms these days — Twitter, unlike Hensley, allows everyone to have a voice.

Catch an all-new Modern Family on Wednesday, February 22 at 9pm ET/PT on ABC.
