Aside from Alex Dunphy (Ariel Winter), the Dunphy-Pritchett clan doesn’t really pride itself on genius. Sure, Jay (Ed O’Neill) has some brilliant one-liners, and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) has enough brains to win environmental law awards — but no one would expect any of the characters to belong to Mensa.

But, in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Nolan Gould (Luke Dunphy) cracks up the crowd with stories of the “tough times” in his life, how he loves the banjo, and saving for college. But he also casually slips into the conversation that his IQ is 150, and he regularly attends Mensa meetings to discuss string theory.

Nolan says that, because of his character’s slightly off-kilter intellect, most people assume he won’t be the brightest bulb either, constantly asking him, “Do you understand me?” very slowly.

After watching Nolan in this clip, we’re going to watch his scenes in Modern Family far more closely. He could be the next Andy Kaufman!
