Sofia Vergara grew up in Barranquilla, Colombia, the daughter of a cattle producer. She was raised Catholic and attended a private bilingual Spanish/English school. Her big break came when a talent scout spotted her sunning on a beach and begged her to become a model. Conservative Sofia was reluctant... until her Catholic school teachers gave her permission to pose. With God on her side, Sofia began modeling and appearing in commercials at age 17.

Turns out her teachers were right: Sofia was blessed. Commercial work soon led to a gig as the host of a travel show, which sent her to exotic locales all over the world and made her a star throughout Latin America. Her career took a brief detour in the early ‘90s for marriage, the birth of her son Manolo, and a short stint in dental school, but she soon returned to showbiz, leaving the annual "Hottest Dentist in Baranquilla" prize wide open.

Political unrest in Colombia led Sofia and her family to the U.S., where her career has thrived. After dying her naturally blonde hair brown to look more "Latina," Sofia has appeared in everything from Entourage to the upcoming Smurfs movie. She continues to act back in Colombia as well, playing Alicia Oviedo in Amas de Casa Desesperadas — the South American version of Desperate Housewives. She’s executive producer on the show.

Because of her many accomplishments, Sofía has been named one of the most talented and powerful women in Hispanic entertainment by The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard Magazine, as well as one of 2011’s “Faces to Watch” by The New York Times. And thanks to her hilarious turn as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in Modern Family, Sofia has racked up two supporting actress Emmy nominations (in 2010 and 2011), one Golden Globe nomination, and three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.

Sofia is currently dating tall, dark, handsome (and oh-so-rich!) Los Angeles businessman (and former Florida politician) Nick Loeb. The couple got together at the 2010 Golden Globes and have been inseparable ever since — Nick even relocated to L.A. to be closer to his TV star sweetie.
