Bet you didn’t know... For a period of time while in graduate school, Ty lived out of his van to save money.

Born and raised in Southern Oregon, Ty played football in high school before going on to study acting in college and graduate school. For “extra credit” as an undergrad, he bartended at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Ty has enjoyed a diverse career, having appeared in numerous TV shows, movies, and plays — both on and off Broadway. His TV credits include starring roles on the Fox sitcom Back to You, opposite Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton, and on the CBS sitcom Out of Practice, with Stockard Channing and Henry Winkler. He also guest starred in Law & Order, The West Wing, and Damages. He’s graced the big screen in a string of movies including Evolution, Black Hawk Down, Dawn of the Dead, In Good Company, Fur, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, The Incredible Hulk, and Butter.

Ty cracks fans up as “cool dad” Phil Dunphy on Modern Family, so it’s no wonder the role has earned him numerous high-profile nominations. He’s received two supporting actor Emmy nominations (in 2010 and 2011), as well as a TCA nomination for Individual Achievement in Comedy. Along with his Modern Family co-stars, Ty won a 2010 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

A dad in real life, Ty splits his time between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City with his wife and daughter.
