Mom Blogger Indicted For Fatally Poisoning 5-Year-Old Son to Get Attention
A “mommy blogger,” who wrote on various social media platforms about her son’s illnesses, has been charged with poisoning him to death.
The Journal News reports that Lacey Spears, accompanied by her attorney, turned herself into authorities on June 17. The 26-year-old pleaded “not guilty” to charges of second-degree depraved murder and first-degree manslaughter.
The state alleges that Lacey gave her 5-year-old son Garnett-Paul Spears a lethal dose of sodium, which they say she injected through his feeding tube while he was in the hospital.
Authorities told local media that they believe the single mother is suffering from something called Munchausen syndrome by proxy — a mental illness that compels people to purposefully make their children sick in order to earn the sympathy of others.
Garnett’s medical past indicates a large volume of unexplained medical incidents in his short life, including 23 hospitalizations resulting in seizures, ear infections, and fevers.
Prosecutors say that they have found evidence of Lacey researching the effects high levels of salt have on a child on the internet. They also say that she contacted her neighbor to dispose of the feeding tube she used to feed Garnett.
During the indictment, Lacey told police that she sometimes added “a pinch of salt” to Garnett’s feeding tube, for flavor. She also said that Garnett liked to play with the tube, indicating he could have added the salt himself.
Assistant District Attorney, Doreen Lloyd said, “This mother was intentionally feeding her son salt in toxic levels.”
