Mom Is Legally Changing Her Daughter’s Name to “Awesome”

A mom in Alaska thinks that her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter changing her name is just “awesome.” Literally, and she’s legally trying to make it happen.

Lisa Flores told ABC News that her daughter Viviana should have the middle name “Awesome,” because that’s exactly what the little girl is. “She’s just fun and happy and super smart and it fits her personality,” Lisa explained, adding, “It just fits. She’s an awesome little girl.”

Lisa, 36, filed a petition with a judge in her hometown of Juneau, Alaska, so she could get Viviana’s middle name legally changed from Contea. The single mother — who also has a son, 14-year-old Dominic — says the name change was already planned.

She told ABC that before Viviana was born, she promised Dominic that he could help name his baby sister. He came up with the name “Awesome” back when Lisa was still pregnant with Viviana, but in the confusion of having the baby, the mom says she forgot their agreement.

Lisa completed most of the steps that need to happen before the little girl’s name can legally become official. They include running a four-week notice in the local newspaper, and contacting her daughter’s birth father to get his blessing.

The last step requests that Lisa go before a judge at a hearing on July 17 to explain why she wants the name changed, and to prove that she has no ill purpose in doing so. If the judge agrees to Lisa’s petition, the name change will then become legal.

The story first aired in the Juneau Empire, and has since received a lot of attention — something Lisa says doesn’t really understand why. But she says friends and family have been very supportive of the family’s decision, and that parents and kids at Viviana’s daycare already refer to her as “Viviana Awesome.”

Do you think she should legally change her middle name is “Awesome?”
