Update: Jaden and Will Smith recently appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show and debunked the rumors of Jaden's emancipation request.
His father is a secret agent who fights aliens for a living and his mother is a kick-ass gun slinger in an electronic alter-world. Well, in the movies they play incredible heroes, when in real life, they’re basically just the most awesome parents ever. Cool or not cool, Will revealed to The Sun recently that their oldest son, Jaden, wishes for emancipation for his upcoming 15th birthday. Um, what?
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, who have been married since 2007, have been very vocal on their feelings of forgoing punishment for their two kids — Jaden and Willow. Jada told People back in 2008, “We're not strict but we definitely believe it's a very important component for rearing children," she said. "It creates safety for them. They understand that they need guidance."
It turns out that Jada’s relatively lenient parenting style is as strict as it gets in that family. "[Will]'s so lenient on that stuff," she says. "Daddy tends to [say], 'Yeah! Have chocolate cake for dinner! It’s all right with me.' I'll come home and it's just, 'Has anyone had lunch?' 'Yeah, I had some Frosted Flakes!'"
Now why would anyone want to leave that family? Will recently spoke to The Sun about his son’s wish for his upcoming 15th birthday: “He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh.”
While this must be difficult for the parents to take in, having your oldest child wishing to leave the nest before he’s even legally able to get his driver’s license, Will understands his son’s need to break away. “It’s very similar for Jaden and me — your father’s the biggest movie star in the world, and you’re struggling for your little piece of dignity in this extreme shadow.”
Will and Jaden have worked together on movie sets before, starring side-by-side in The Pursuit of Happiness in 2006, Jaden took the spotlight in the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid, which Will produced, and now their second co-starring film After Earth will be in theaters May 31.
No news yet on whether Will and Jada will actually approve their son’s hefty birthday wish, but if they do, we have a feeling there will be a slight uprising in teens everywhere who want to live on their own. Parents, brace yourselves: The emancipation requests are coming.
