We’re fierce animal lovers here at Wetpaint Moms, so when we heard about the 17 puppies and their mama who were found abandoned near the Indiana Dunes State Park yesterday, our hearts sank into our shoes.
The puppies appear to be Labrador/Rottweiler/shepherd mixes, according to CBS Chicago, and thankfully they were rescued as soon as they were dropped off. Karen Read was driving home last night when she saw one, then two, then several more glowing eyes staring at her from the side of the road. As she got closer, she said she saw a gold SUV with its lights off drive away as she approached. She assumed this was the person responsible for abandoning the pups.
“It was shocking to see all these puppies,” Karen says. “I got out of my car and just started running everywhere, grabbing, getting down on my knees and calling to them.”
The pups are being housed currently at Lakeshore PAWS, a shelter in Valparaiso, Indiana, and will be ready for adoption soon. "They're great little puppies," said Dog Coordinator Ashley Hill. "They're hilarious."
All 17 have received their first round of puppy shots and have been dewormed and microchipped. The shelter has experienced a huge surge in calls for the puppies since their story went public, estimating about 100 calls in just the past day!
These mini love bugs are so ready for a do-over, and we would actually like to thank whomever gave them up, because they were all given the opportunity to be loved for life the minute that person drove away and never looked back.
