Most of us can’t afford personal trainers, or we simply don’t have the time to dedicate to working out for hours at a time like some celebs. That’s why we were ecstatic to hear about Hilary Duff’s weight loss secret, since the sexy starlet and new momma to 14-month-old Luca says it took her a whole year to lose her 50-pound baby weight gain. That sounds more our speed (and more realistic)!

Just after birth, when most Hollywood moms tear into strenuous workouts with personal trainers or go to extremes with dieting or wearing double corsets (we’re looking at you, Jessica Alba!), Hilary took a few months off.

“I never had to lose so much before, and it took awhile to get mentally motivated,” the 25-year-old tells Life & Style. “I was enjoying being home with my baby, and I wasn’t super strict with my diet.”

As she should! A new baby needs to bond with his or her mother in those first few months — and vice versa — and weight is the last thing a new mom should have to worry about. Also, we totally get the mental motivation issue. It’s so easy just to skip the gym in favor of more “pressing issues,” but a little time to yourself to vent your frustrations with a medicine ball never hurt anyone (except maybe your arms in the morning).

In late 2012, when she was finally ready and willing to get to work on herself, Hilary did end up employing a personal trainer, but her weight loss sport of choice makes her one of the most badass babes in our eyes: Boxing!

“It makes me feel super fierce,” Hilary says. “[My personal trainer] and I box outside my home, so my neighbors watched the whole shrinking process! They cheered me on!”

Good for you, Hilary, and way to lose that stubborn weight in a way that us average Janes can relate to and see ourselves trying out. Although, can we just say that you still looked fab even before your bikini-body makeover?
