Dogs often emerge as heroes, and a Thai dog named Pui certainly earned that title on Monday. The Bangkok Post reports that the dog carried a plastic bag that contained a newborn baby girl who was believed to have been left for dead in a roadside dump back to his home on Monday morning.
Once home, the dog barked until Sudarat, 12, heard the noise. She was the first to see the baby, who was only 2.2 kg and believe to have been born prematurely. The girl ran to get her father, Kummerd, and mother, Pummarat. The parents rushed the baby, who was quite weak, to the hospital. She was given oxygen and is now in stable condition.
Police haven't located the baby’s mother, but this story does have a happy ending. Not only did Pui receive a leather collar and a certificate of appreciation from the Red Cross, but the Miracle of Life Foundation from that district gave the owners money to feed Pui and their other three dogs. To boot, Mrs. Pummarat has let the Red Cross office know of her intention to adopt the baby, as Sudarat has been her only child. Once the orphaned girl is in good health, the office will make a decision on the adoption.
