History tells the age-old story of the woman who longs to bear a staggering brood of floor scrubbers in order to feel fulfilled in her life and please her man. Likewise, the stories also tell the tale of the man who wishes to sleep with multiple women and be forever free of the committal ties to a woman and their crying, feeding, defiling horde of young. Sadly — yes we’re being sarcastic — these profiles have recently been crushed by a 2013 Father’s Day poll from the Associated Press that finally reveals the truth that more men actually want kids than women!

Yes, ‘tis true that the times are a-changin’ and 8 out of 10 men say they’ve always wanted to be fathers, compared to 7 out of 10 women who say they’ve always wanted to be mothers. One commenter on Jezebel said, “I have often thought that if I were a man, I would be much more willing to have children. Pregnancy and childbirth are a pretty big deterrent for me.”

This surprises us, considering the modern medicines, surgeries, and pre- and post-natal care that most mothers in the U.S. are entitled to. Less pain, fewer infant and mother deaths, quicker deliveries, the option of a Cesarean section, and other incredible advances should make women feel safer about the prospect of bearing children, no? Apparently not.

Perhaps it’s just how open the whole process is now, what with the graphic YouTube videos and wonderful movies like What To Expect When You’re Expecting that documents just how different the pregnancy journey can be for each woman that has scared a good deal of us away.

Still, the poll does go on to confirm that the reasoning behind those women who still feel the need to procreate is the opportunity to care for and nurture a child, and for a man, they just want someone to carry their last name and strong jaw. Why, how perfectly 16th century of you!

Although the poll’s presented findings are noteworthy, we still maintain hope that there are a few good men out there who are as excited to have kids for the sake of creating a doorway growth chart and player soccer parent as we are.

We want to know what you think about the poll’s findings. Comment below!
