High school graduation could be argued as one of the most significant days of a person’s life, and Lake Braddock senior Nick Balenger was able to walk across the stage at his own graduation this year, despite a horrible accident just one ago that left him paralyzed.
During a family vacation to Hawaii, WUSA reports, Nick dove into a shallow pool of water and was left paralyzed. He had to forget his life prior to the accident that included being the star pitcher for his school’s baseball team, and instead focused on getting better.
“Ever since I got hurt I said my goal was to be on stage walking across and going down the steps," Nick told WUSA. "It feels great to accomplish it."
His mother was so proud of him that day, as he not only stood but walked 50 feet across the stage with the help of a walker, and then proceeded down the steps with a cane. He wasn’t able to see the standing ovation he received as he took each step, but he felt it.
"I was focusing on walking. I almost got blown over by everybody just screaming. It was awesome. It felt great," he said.
Congratulations to Nick for achieving one of the major goals on his journey to recovery!
