The New York Daily News has been widely criticized for publishing a photo of Sasha Obama, who was recently visiting the New York City neighborhood of SoHo with friends and a security detail. In the photo, 12-year-old Sasha is wearing short denim shorts with black lycra shorts underneath.

Clutch reports that although the photos, as well as the entire story, have been removed from the New York Daily News’ website, the photo that caused the biggest uproar was taken from the back and was reportedly rather gratuitous.

Publishing the photos also set off a series of comments on the media outlet’s website that were also very inappropriate. Obviously the paparazzi, as well as traditional media, are going to report on the comings and goings of the Obama daughters, but it’s important to keep in mind that they are average teens trying to have what passes as a ‘normal’ life, considering that they are the children of the most powerful man in the free world.

Anyone who remembers the awkward Chelsea Clinton years can sympathize with Sasha and Malia, but objectifying teens of any age, no matter who their parents are, should be something media outlets have enough self awareness to police on their own. They shouldn’t need to rely on public opinion to tell them when they’ve gone too far.

What do you think, moms: Was it wrong to publish the photos?
