Charles Spencer, the younger brother of the late Princess Diana, expressed his excitement today over the birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal baby.

"We're all so pleased," William’s uncle told Us Weekly in a statement. "It's wonderful news."

Getting sentimental after what must have been a bittersweet day for the Spencer family, Charles remembered his father, John Spencer, telling him about Diana’s birth.

"My father always told us how Diana was born on just such a blisteringly hot day, at Sandringham, in July 1961." Of the birth of Kate Middleton and Prince William’s first child, he said, "It's another very happy summer's day, half a century on."

Diana’s absence must certainly have been profoundly felt by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge today, as they welcomed Kate’s parents and Prince Charles and Camilla to see the baby for the first time.

In what was perhaps a touching tribute to William’s mother, Kate Middleton stepped out in cornflower blue polka dot dress to introduce her newborn to the world as the left the hospital today. Thirty-one years ago, in 1982, Diana chose a green polka dot dress when she greeted the press after Prince William’s birth on the very same steps at St. Mary’s Hospital.
