It’s been a terrible week for foodborne illness in products around the country, and this latest news is no exception.
CNN reports that the National Beef Packing Company company, based in Kansas, is recalling 50,000 pounds of their ground beef product, fearing it might be contaminated with E. coli. In an online statement released yesterday, the company said that they were issuing a voluntary recall of NatureSource Natural Beef, Naturewell Natural Beef, and National Beef commodity ground beef. The meat was produced July 18 and has a use by/freeze by date of August 7. The company cited “one 10 pound chub testing positive for E. coli O157:H7” as the reason for the recall.
National Beef Packing says that the ground beef was shipped out nationally, although it’s unclear whether the products were sold at a retail level. At this time, the company says that nobody has fallen ill due to the possibly contaminated product. The recall is the second incident just this summer for the company, which recalled 22,000 pounds of beef in June, also over E. coli contamination concerns.
The USDA says that “E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.” According to the CDC, approximately 76,000 cases of E. coli are reported every year.
