Twerking was crazy before, and it’s gotten even crazier since its foray into pop culture a few months ago. The twisting, jerking dance move made popular by the likes of Nikki Minaj, Beyoncé, and Miley Cyrus has inspired teens everywhere to shake what their mommas gave ‘em, but now, according to ABC News, it’s inspiring pregnant women to get back in touch with their ‘fun, flirty side,’ too!
"Moms are very plugged into pop culture, and also have a great sense of humor, so it's no surprise they're enjoying this craze like everyone else," says Linda Murray, global editor in chief of BabyCenter.
While this craze definitely has its appeal, Murray adds that it may also pose health risks. As you move your hips vigorously back and forth in such a quick motion, the pregnant belly gets bumped up and down, too, and that poor baby may not enjoy the dance as much as you do. She recommends checking in with your doctor before cutting a rug.
If you are given the green light, don’t hold back! Exercise during pregnancy can get those endorphins flowing, boost your mood, and even relieve some minor aches and pains. "Being pregnant doesn't mean your life is over," says Murray. "Trends like this and the ‘50 Shades of Grey’ baby boom we saw last summer prove that you're still a woman when you become a mother. And you can shake your booty just like you did before!"
