Hannah Anderson, the teenage victim of a horrific kidnapping, and the subject of a multi-state Amber Alert, was recently seen in her first public appearance since the terrible ordeal that left her mother and brother dead, allegedly at the hands of close family friend James DiMaggio.
CBS News reports that the 16-year-old, who was rescued Saturday after DiMaggio was shot several times in a shootout with police that took place in the remote woods of Idaho, was seen attending a fundraiser on Thursday at a restaurant in the San Diego suburb of Lakeside.
After reports surfaced yesterday from unsealed police search warrants that DiMaggio allegedly tortured Hannah’s mother Christina and her 8-year-old brother Ethan before murdering them and their family dog in his California home, we can only surmise that Hannah is eager to put these horrific events behind her. Twenty percent of the fundraiser’s proceeds went to help the Anderson family.
Anderson’s father, Brett, told the media after the fundraiser, "This is a small community that we are a part of. The community came together putting on this great fundraiser for Hannah... and this is how Lakeside rolls. So I just wanted to say how much we appreciate it from everybody, the community, family, friends for being here ... and local sheriffs and law enforcement."
Hannah also took to social media on Monday evening to discuss some of the details of her abduction. While Hannah has not confirmed that it was her, it’s now widely surmised that these postings were indeed from the teen, who when asked whether it was preferable that DiMaggio was shot repeatedly instead of being imprisoned for life, responded, “He deserved what he got.”
While there are still so many details about the crime that have yet to come to light, and we are left with so many questions, our heart goes out to Hannah and her remaining family members. We hope she can somehow put this tragedy behind her and heal.
