The Staunton News Leader, a Gannett newspaper in Staunton, Virginia, really fu**ked up recently, accidentally printing the F-word in the kids section in the Tuesday morning edition.
The regrettable error appeared in a caption under a crayon drawing, which appeared adjacent to the kids section of the paper. The caption, which appears on the blog of Joe Romanesko here, said, “If you’re a fucking idiot, it can be fun to refer to your draft site as ‘the war room.’” The caption was a line of copy lifted from The Onion’s story, “Tips For Hosting a Fantasy Football Draft.”
Once the error was brought to the newspaper’s attention, David Fritz, the executive editor, promptly issued a public apology on the paper’s website. Fritz said that the mistake was made by a vendor, Accuweather.com.
According to Fritz, “The print weather package is fully assembled by Accuweather and placed on the page in a completed form. The language was not caught by our editors and made it into print. First of all, we apologize for this getting into the newspaper. Secondly, we'll be working internally and with our vendor to make certain that there's no repeat.”
