As if you needed yet another reason to blame your mom for everything that’s wrong in your life, a new study suggests that how we look as we age might be at least partly due to her genes.
Science Daily reports that the groundbreaking study was published in the journal Nature, it shows how mitochondrial DNA (mDNA) is a factor on how we age. According to Dr. Nils-Göran Larsson, a professor at the Karolinska Institutet and principal investigator at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Aging, "For the first time, the researchers have shown that the aging process is influenced not only by the accumulation of mitochondrial DNA damage during a person's lifetime, but also by the inherited DNA from their mothers.”
In short, he said, “If we inherit mDNA with mutations from our mother, we age more quickly."
Before you go all-in with on blame game, though, the study indicates that maybe these genes aren’t so bad after all. Doctors think the new study might be able to provide keys to disrupt the cycle of aging. Dr. Barry Hoffer, a co-author of the study from the Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, says, “These findings also suggest that therapeutic interventions that target mitochondrial function may influence the time course of aging."
