Summer is almost over, which means if you haven’t already, it’s time to break out the trusty sleeping bag and go camping! Heading to the great outdoors is a great way to treat your family to a vacation on the cheap (after all, who needs a hotel room when you have a tent, right guys?), and we've rounded up the five best kid-friendly camping sites on the East Coast — all of which are packed with fun activities for your adventure-seeking family. Just remember to bring bug spray and your best ghost stories!

1. Hershey Park Camping Resort

This 55-acre campground in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, might just be the best of the best. Not only does it offer camping sites for both tents and RVs, you can rent a deluxe log cabin and enjoy everything the site has to offer from the comfort of a bed! But the best part? The campground is just a hop, skip, and jump away from Hershey Park, which features rides, a zoo, the world-famous Chocolate World, and a water park. Oh, and pets are allowed, so bring your four-legged friend!

2. Cherrystone Camping Family Resort

This gorgeous beachside campground is nestled on 300 acres of Chesapeake Bay waterfront, and has something for everyone! The site accommodates both RVs and tents, or you could always stay in a cottage, cabin, or rental trailer. Your kids will have a blast swimming, crafting, playing at the arcade, throwing horseshoes, and chilling at the nearby Splash Park — while parents will enjoy shopping at the local farm stand, canoeing, and going on sunset cruises to find dolphins!

3. Pirateland Family Camping Resort

This adventure-packed campground offers oceanfront camping for tents and RVs (as well as vacation cabins), and there's no shortage of entertainment for your kiddos. Not only will they have fun in the sun by the beach, there's a kiddie pool, paddle boat rentals, an ice cream parlor, mini-golf, basketball courts, and fishing! Three words: non-stop fun. And oh yeah, this entire place is pirate-themed, in case you hadn't already guessed.

4. Island Resort Co-Op RV Park

This family owned campground is located a few minutes from Ocean City, Maryland, and will give you a slightly more relaxed vacation than somewhere like Pirateland. The grounds are serene and peaceful, and offer both camping, RV, and cabin accommodations. This is a great spot to teach your little ones about the great outdoors, so make sure to take advantage of canoe and kayak rentals, as well as fishing. And bonus — there's a pool!

5. Huntington Beach State Park

Take your family on an outdoorsy adventure at South Carolina's Huntington Beach State Park. This gorgeous beachside campground offers great fishing, bird watching, hiking trails, a freshwater lake with alligators, and a Nature Center where your kids can check out endangered plants and animals like loggerhead turtles. And parents, you might be interested to know that Huntington is home to the world-famous Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival, which goes down Sept 27-29, 2013!
