Billy Ray Cyrus has broken his silence about daughter Miley Cyrus's recent VMA performance, in which the pop diva and wild child extraordinaire shook her booty and practically molested Robin Thicke, as well as herself, with a giant foam finger.
The country star told Entertainment Tonight, "Of course I'll always be here for Miley. Can't wait see her when she gets home. She's still my little girl and I'm still her Dad regardless how this circus we call show business plays out. I love her unconditionally and that will never change."
While Billy Ray seems to have said his peace about the matter, fans and the media alike are still hovering over the obvious questions: What did he actually think of her performance and why is she acting out?
The father of four with wife Tish Cyrus has had not only a personal relationship with his daughter, but also a professional one. Billy Ray coasted along on Miley’s fame from The Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana as he played her on-screen widowed dad in the hit show in the early 2000s.
What has all that time together wrought? The relationship has been on and off for the famous daddy/daughter duo. Billy Ray has always put himself out there as attempting to do his best to be a good dad to 20-year-old Miley, even if he might not always be the best role model. Here’s a sampling of some of Billy Ray’s more memorable quotes, which give us some insight into what it’s like being dad to a pop diva:
At a charity fundraiser for Boys and Girls Clubs of America that Billy Ray and Miley hosted back in 2006, he told WKTV, "Miley and I have a great relationship. I think it's important as parents and neighbors that we spend quality time with children and to encourage others in our communities to do the same.”
The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer might not be able to tame his now grown up rebellious daughter, but as he told GQ Magazine back in 2011, he feels the need to be there for her: "I'm scared for her. She's got a lot of people around her that's putting her in a great deal of danger. I know she's 18, but I still feel like as her daddy I'd like to try to help. Take care of her just a little bit, to at least get her out of danger. I want to get her sheltered from the storm. Stop the insanity just for a minute. When you go through what she's been through, it takes a beating on you.”
The country star tweeted after the announcement of Miley’s engagement to Liam Hemsworth in June of 2012, “All I ever hoped for as a Daddy was to see my kids reach their dreams. To find happiness… peace of mind… and someday know… true love.”
In April of this year, he told Terrence Jenkins and Giuliana Rancic in an interview with E! News, "I like right now just being her daddy and her friend. I like where our relationship is at right now," adding, "I'm very proud of her."
What do you think of Billy Ray's reaction to his daughter? Should he talk to her about the performance, or is this his way of saying "her life, her choices?"
