You hear all the time that babies are miracles but a UK woman who awoke from a coma to find out she was 12 weeks pregnant knows this more than most. Gemma Holmes was riding a moped last year when she got into an accident that caused her to be launched across a busy road into a lamp post.
Gemma suffered massive injuries that included a broken back, and the doctors who treated her didn’t even expect her to survive.
Not only did she defy her own odds, but she was able to sustain the pregnancy as well.
Gemma’s mother, Julie, was faced with the horrific decision of whether to keep the baby or terminate, as doctors said she wouldn’t be able to undergo surgery to fix her back until after she’d given birth.
Julie, who now takes care of Gemma since she is wheelchair-bound, wanted to wait until Gemma awoke from the coma to make the decision. Once she did awake, she had no recollection of being in a relationship, as she suffered a brain injury that caused her to forget the previous three years. This is prime made-for-TV movie material!
Gemma suffered terrible pain throughout the pregnancy, as she wasn’t able to take the pain medication she needed for her back. Fortunately, the aptly named Ruben “Miracle” is healthy and happy, and was born via cesarean section. He had to be born via C-section, as giving birth would have put pressure on her brain, which had already sustained an injury from the accident.
Now that baby Ruben has been born, Gemma is due to have an MRI scan to find out whether an operation will help her to walk one day again.
