Since Miley Cyrus’s show-stopping performance at the 2013 Video Music Awards, the internet and social media in particular has blown up with arguments for and against the 20-year-old’s rather raunchy stage display with the 36-year-old Robin Thicke. Our own coverage has garnered a great deal of discussion from you, our readers, so we wanted to share and spotlight a few of the most interesting comments that we received on our pieces.
As always, you all feel passionate about entertainment news, and more often than not, we found that you mostly agreed that Miley’s twerking and grinding was disgusting and over the top for the younger crowd who may have been tuning in.
Gladys Montalvo commented on our opinion piece of the performance, saying, “She took the ‘adult’ theme a little too far. I know she wants to be sexy but seriously she ruined what could have been a great performance for her, and yes the tongue, I see you got one, now keep it in your mouth for crying out loud.”
Jayme Sitton, who commented on the same post, wrote, “…young girls loved ‘Hannah Montana’ including my Granddaughters... Now I have to explain to them, that growing up doesn't mean doing this !!!!! So much for her being a role model… !!!!”
On our parents react piece, April Martin Edmonson commented, “Completely ashamed I let my kids watch this, complete trash!!! Another lyndsy lohan [sic] in the making!!” April, we certainly hope not! It makes us so sad to see stars like Lindsay, Miley, and Amanda Bynes going off the rails, but we can rein it all in when we just take a look at Hilary Duff and her baby boy Luca. Now there is a Disney star that made good choices!
On our Brooke Shields reaction piece, Juliana Martinez reflected on how Miley could have done the night a little differently, saying, “I thought: What if she stood alone on the stage in a plain dress and sang a song without embellishment, synthesizers, back-up singers, etc? Wouldn't that be as sensational and unexpected as what she did, but in a positive way? Billy Ray, take hold of your daughter and straighten her out!”
In fact, Juliana, Billy Ray eventually responded to his daughter’s performance in a rather indirect way, which we noted in our Billy Ray reaction piece. While many commenters felt he could have done a better job of monitoring his daughter’s actions, Jessica-Marie Carpenter thought Billy Ray did all a father could do: “Well she is an adult,” Jessica-Marie wrote, “so it doesn't really matter what he says. It has nothing to do with parenting either. Kids in their 20's do things like this all the time (go to clubs ,etc. you see a lot worse. I know I have).”
Other special mentions go to Shari Richards who said, “If you all didn't like it you could change the channel,” and Endrid Cole, who warned, “Run Liam, Run,” referring to Miley’s fiancée, Liam Hemsworth.
Keep commenting! We love reading what you all have to say. Most importantly, though, thanks for reading Wetpaint Moms!
